One objective, one ad set, three to five ads.

Meta offers a choice of six objectives. For a product page, the one you want is Sales. Meta describes it as finding the people most likely to buy, for instance through an online store.1 TikTok calls its version Sales as well. In some accounts it still appears under its old name, Website conversions.2

Under the objective, both platforms use the same three levels. A campaign holds the objective. Inside it, an ad set (TikTok says ad group) holds the audience, the placements, the budget and the dates. Inside that sit the ads themselves.3,4 The mistake most first campaigns make is to build too much of it. Meta’s own advice is to avoid high ad volumes, because when you run too many ad sets at once each one gets fewer results and stays in learning longer.5

So build one of each. One campaign, one ad set, and inside it three to five ads that are clearly different from one another. That count is TikTok’s. It suggests three to five creatives per ad group, and says the ads should differ a lot, especially when you are testing.6

The whole campaign
  • Objective: Sales Meta’s name and TikTok’s. Website conversions in older TikTok accounts.1,2
  • One campaign It holds the objective and nothing else.
  • One ad set Audience, placements, budget and dates all live here.3,4
  • Three to five ads Different from each other, all in the one ad set.6

Let the platform pick the audience.

You do not know who your customer is yet. That is fine, because the platforms would rather find out themselves. For a sales campaign, Meta’s recommendation is its Advantage+ campaign, which chooses the audience, the placements and the budget split for you.7 TikTok says the same thing to first-time sellers: try automatic targeting, and if you do set your own, keep it broad.8

There is a reason beyond convenience. When an ad set cannot get enough results to learn, the first fix Meta lists is to expand the audience, not to narrow it. A bigger audience means more chances for someone to take the action you are optimising.9 Interest lists and lookalikes can come later, once you have customers to seed them.

Give it enough budget to learn.

Meta’s system wants about 50 results a week from an ad set. Below that it calls the ad set learning limited, and says plainly that the budget is not being spent well.9 If your budget cannot buy 50 purchases a week, Meta’s advice is not to shrink the budget. It is to optimise for something that happens more often, such as adding to cart.9 TikTok tells new sellers exactly that: choose Add to Cart as the first campaign’s optimisation event.8

TikTok also publishes its floor. A campaign’s daily budget must be more than 50 dollars and an ad group’s more than 20, and its starting point for a first shop campaign is at least 30 dollars a day on the ad group.8,10 Meta publishes no such number for the ordinary bid strategy, so we will not invent one. Set what you can keep up for six weeks, and do not change it often: on TikTok, while a campaign is learning, raise the budget by no more than 40 percent at a time and no more than every two days.10

50 a week The results Meta’s system wants from one ad set. Fewer, and it calls the ad set learning limited.9

Then leave it alone for a week.

A new ad set spends its first week learning. Meta says it needs about 50 results in a week to get through, that results are less stable and usually dearer while it does, and that you should wait until it is out of the learning phase before you edit anything.11 The list of edits that send it back to the start is long: a change to the creative, a change to the audience, adding an ad, a big change to the budget, or pausing it for a week.12 TikTok’s learning phase works the same way. Its guidance says the swings settle after about 25 results or seven days, that 50 conversions is the clearest sign it has passed, and that you should not pause or edit while it is running.13

Google goes further. It tells advertisers to give a new Performance Max campaign at least six weeks, and to make no changes at all for one to two weeks after any big adjustment.14 Three platforms, one instruction. The first week is not the time to judge, and it is not the time to tinker.

7 days The first week of a new ad set, on Meta and on TikTok. Results are less stable and usually cost more.11,13
50 Results in a week that mark the end of learning on Meta. The same number is TikTok’s clearest sign of passing it.11,13
6 weeks How long Google says to give a new campaign before comparing its performance.14

Upload the day before. Read it on day seven.

Ads do not start the moment you press publish. Both platforms review them first, and both say most ads are reviewed within 24 hours, sometimes longer.15,16 On Meta you can schedule a start date, and a scheduled ad goes through review and then waits for its date.15 So upload the day before you want to start, and set the date.

Then the first honest read is a week in. Meta’s testing guidance says a comparison shorter than seven days may not tell you anything, and TikTok’s says the same, seven days minimum.17 On day seven you look at one thing: which of the three to five ads got the results, and at what cost. That is the whole review.

A woman with curly hair pins a small printed frame onto a paper wall planner laid out in weeks, the first columns already filled with a row of different shots of the same pair of brown boots, the later columns still empty.

After that, swap the ad when it tires.

An ad does not keep working. Meta marks one as fatigued when its cost per result reaches double what your past ads paid, and warns you early if it expects that inside the first seven days. Its fix is a new ad that is materially different.18 TikTok’s guidance, when an ad starts to tire, is to replace it with three to five new ones, and it says that tends to happen around every seven days. It also says to add them to the existing ad group rather than start a new one.6,19

That is the rhythm for the rest of the campaign. Read the cost per result on day seven and after. When an ad is tiring, add the next three to five to the same ad set, in one batch. One batch, because on Meta adding an ad is itself an edit that restarts learning, so add them together rather than one at a time.12 If TikTok’s seven days holds, that is roughly a batch a week. Leave the audience, the budget and the dates alone. The ads are the part you change.

Six weeks, one product
  1. Day before Upload and schedule Three to five different ads into one ad set. Review takes up to a day.15,16
  2. Week 1 Hands off Learning. No edits, no pausing, no budget changes.11,13
  3. Day 7 First read Which ad got the results, and at what cost. Seven days is the minimum for a fair comparison.17
  4. Week 2 Next batch When the first ads tire, three to five new ones, added to the same ad set in one go.6,12
  5. Weeks 3 to 5 Replace as they tire TikTok expects that around every seven days. Cost per result is the tell.18,19
  6. Week 6 Decide Six weeks in, compare. TikTok says to scale once an ad group brings 50 conversions a week.14,20

The count, and where InstantClips comes in.

Add it up. A first batch of three to five ads, then a new batch each time the last one tires, is somewhere between eighteen and thirty different ads for one product in six weeks if TikTok’s seven days holds.6,19 No platform will tell you that figure. It is ours, worked out from their advice, and it is a planning example rather than a promise. It is also far more ads than a first-time seller has ever had made by hand.

InstantClips makes the batch. Paste your product page. It reads the page, writes a short plan for the ad, the hook, the format and the first three seconds, and generates the vertical video from that plan. Ask for the next angle and you get a different ad, not the last one cut again. The first video is free, and you read the plan before anything is made. See the example library, or see what it costs. If you have not set the accounts up yet, Step 2 is the checklist, for Meta or for TikTok.

3–5 Ads in the first batch, and in every batch that replaces a tired one. TikTok’s number.6,19
6 weeks The run before you compare. Google’s number.14
18–30 Different ads for one product over six weeks, if an ad tires about weekly. Our planning example, not a platform figure.
