Clothing sells on a person.
The top clothing ads on TikTok and Facebook have a lot in common. Nearly every one has a person on screen within three seconds, and on TikTok more than half are a fit check. Here’s what they do, so your ads can do it too.

Made with InstantClips
One clothing seller stopped filming.
Chloe runs an ecommerce agency, and one of its clients sells fashion on TikTok Shop. The agency now makes that client’s videos with InstantClips, so nobody films them any more.
By Chloe’s figures, a video that used to cost about 200 dollars now costs almost nothing, and the client gets more than 150 new videos a month for each product. Its sales rose by more than 500 percent.
Every one of those videos is UGC-style, the look the top clothing ads share. See how her agency works.
A person is on screen from the start.
99 percent of the top clothing ads have a person in them within three seconds. For other products, it’s 85 percent.
The clothes come first too. In nine in ten of these ads they are on screen within the first second. So open on someone wearing the piece, from the very first frame.
The fit check is the ad.
The most common clothing ad is the fit check. Someone puts the piece on, in a mirror or talking straight to the phone, and shows you how it fits. 56 percent of the top TikTok clothing ads are fit checks. On Facebook it is 23 percent, and try-on hauls, where one person tries on piece after piece, add another 11.
That makes your choice easy. If you make one kind of clothing ad, make a fit check. None of the other products we looked at has one kind of ad that leads like that.
They talk about the fit, the fabric and the size.
Four in five top clothing ads have someone talking, and on TikTok they nearly always talk the whole way through.
Six in ten open on a claim about the piece, such as how it feels, how it fits or what it costs. Only one in twenty-five opens with a question.
Then they get specific. Most talk about how it fits, and about half about the fabric: how soft it is, how far it stretches, what the lining is. Two in five of the ads that talk say what size the person is wearing, or give their height and weight, so you can picture the piece on yourself.
Spend the words on the fit, not the name. Fewer than a third of the clothing ads that talk say what the piece is called, against nearly half of the top ads for other products.
Shot on a phone, not in a studio.
95 percent of the top TikTok clothing ads look as if someone shot them on a phone. More than half hold one shot through the first five seconds, and two in three have no music at all.
Facebook’s top clothing ads are more edited, with more cuts, more words on screen and music under most of them. Even there, four in five look filmed on a phone.
So the ad that sells clothes looks like a customer’s own video. It starts from clear photos of the piece, and you can take those on your phone.
Make the fit check from your product page.
Paste the link to any piece in your store. InstantClips reads the page and writes the whole script, from the claim at the start to the ask at the end. For clothing it can make a fit check, a try-on haul, an outfit of the day or a flat lay. It picks the one that suits the piece, or you name one.
We keep studying the top ads, and what we learn goes into every script we write. You read every line before anything is made. The person in the video is cast for the ad, so nobody has to model the clothes, and the listing photos you already have are enough to start.
- Fit check Tried on at home and styled a few ways, in the mirror or talking straight to you.
- Try-on haul Tried on in each colour or piece, one after another, with a reaction to the fit and the fabric.
- Outfit of the day Worn out on the street as the heart of a full outfit.
- Flat lay Laid out and built into a complete outfit, piece by piece.
Your product page is all it takes.
Four real clothing stores, and the ads InstantClips made from their product pages.
